02 / The fresh moment

The Kroger Fresh moment, right now.

Albertsons just finished rolling AI-powered fresh ordering and inventory across every one of its 2,200 banner stores. That's the largest direct competitor on Kroger's doorstep, now permanently AI-augmented in the highest-margin, highest-shrink part of the store.

At the same time, fresh is becoming the differentiator that grocery customers actually choose between. Walmart is investing. Costco is investing. The bar for "fresh quality" is now set by the chain that wastes the least and out-of-stocks the rarest.

Kroger's fresh footprint is bigger and more banner-diverse than any competitor: Ralph's, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Harris Teeter, Mariano's, Smith's, Fry's, and more. That's an advantage that compounds — but only on a fresh stack built for it.

The window to lead is open. It does not stay open forever.
